HONORARY DOCTORATE (Phd)

The rank of honorary doctorate or doctor Honorius cause is an honorific title granted by an exceptional procedure. Originally a university would confer the dignity of doctor Honorius cause in order to distinguish a learned person whose knowledge and wisdom were considered exemplary, but also, in return, to pride itself for having recognized and "recruited" among its faculty such an outstanding person. Formerly universities have given some more picturesque titles than doctor honoris causa, like doctor or professor angelicus, eximius, mirabilis, subtilis, illuminates... The conferring of an honorary doctorate or doctor honoris causa still follows, sometimes, an old protocol.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Applications are welcome at any time, but for consideration for award at the next convocation ceremonies, Applications must be submitted by December 15th of each year. Applications will be compiled by the Committee secretary.

SCOPE & OPPORTUNITIES

Universities typically award honorary degrees to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the school or to society. In many cases, the holder of an honorary doctorate already has considerable education and experience in the degree field. However, in some cases the degree is awarded to an individual with no formal education. Receiving an honorary degree, especially from a major university, is an impressive recognition of one's talents and contributions. An honorary doctorate can bring recognition to its holder in the public sphere, and is an asset in finding a job in the recipient's field. However, most honorary degree recipients already enjoy enough public recognition that the degree merely emphasizes the qualifications they already have. Receiving an honorary doctorate qualifies its holder to use the title "Dr." in front of his name, though some find this demeaning to those who hold earned doctorates. Some holders of honorary doctorates use "Dr." to emphasize their credentials and earn extra publicity.
